EuroJournal appear to have confirmed what squad number Tom Heaton will occupy next season following his arrival at the club last week.
Heaton became United’s first official signing of the summer when he signed a two-year contract last Friday to become the club’s new third-choice goalkeeper.
The 35-year-old started his career in the United academy and left permanently in 2012 but has re-signed for the club following his release by Aston Villa at the end of last season.
Heaton was pictured back at Carrington on Monday as a small United squad began pre-season training, with 13 of the 18 players photographed academy graduates.
Official photographers captured the United players during the session and Heaton could be seen sporting the club’s new training range with the No.22 emblazoned into the fabric.
It indicates the English shot-stopper will inherit the squad number previously worn by fellow back-up ‘keeper Sergio Romero following his summer exit from the club.
The Argentine was one of eight players released by the club this summer, bringing his six-year stay at Old Trafford to a disappointing end.
Despite being a fan favourite, Romero only made 61 appearances for United as he largely played second fiddle to David de Gea during his stint, but he did enjoy highlights such as keeping a clean sheet in the Europa League final victory over Ajax in 2017.
The final year of Romero’s time at United was not enjoyable, however, as he was not involved in a single match after Dean Henderson usurped his place and was frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
